He played a starring role as Brazil defeated England in the quarter-final and Chile in the semi-final – scoring twice on both occasions. Despite suffering with a heavy fever, Garrincha helped Brazil to lift the Jules Rimet trophy for a second time thanks to a 3-1 win over Czechoslovakia in the final.
