By the mid-1990s, John Barnes and Liverpool begun somewhat of a renaissance after a few years of instability and struggle. Now playing predominantly in a more central role, Barnes became a figure of experience in a youthful Liverpool side. Barnes was a key figure in midfield as Liverpool finished in the top 4 for three consecutive seasons between 1994 and 1997 and lifted the League Cup title in 1995 when they defeated Bolton Wanderers 2-1 in the final at Wembley.
